Former UCLID Fellow Awarded Fulbright Scholarship
 

The UCLID Center at the University of Pittsburgh is proud to announce Adrienne Wiley, former UCLID trainee, was awarded a William J. Fulbright scholarship. Adrienne recently began examining programs that address the needs of minorities with disabilities currently in place in the United States and New Zealand. With this scholarship, she will analyze the Maori objective of the New Zealand Disability Strategy (NZDS) with a focus on its creation and implementation. She will consider whether this framework for service delivery, which promotes the rights of cultural minorities with disabilities in New Zealand, can inform the development of systems in the United States, particularly for Native Americans with disabilities. UCLID’s Early Childhood Partnerships Program Awarded Collaborative Pre-Kindergarten Research Grant from Heinz Endowments and State
 

Dr. Stephen J. Bagnato, Professor of Pediatrics & Psychology and Core UCLID faculty member was awarded a $1 million, 4-year collaborative research grant (2005-2009) from the Heinz Endowments and the Pennsylvania Office of Child Development, Departments of Public Welfare and Education.

The grant is awarded to conduct longitudinal research on the impact and outcomes of the state’s new Partnership for Quality Pre-Kindergarten Initiative (PQP). PQP uses Accountability and Head Expansion funds from the state to fund preschool program’s in 17 high-need school district/community early childhood partnerships. Dr. Bagnato’s evaluation research project entitled, Pennsylvania Pre-Kindergarten Analysis (PAPREKA), will document the relationship between child progress in early learning skills, program quality, and the type of partnership program employed in a school district. All child outcomes will be mapped to the new PA Early Learning Standards. Overall, the potential success for 17 school district partnership programs serving approximately 1,000 children will be evaluated.

University Student Organization Wins National Award
 

The UCLID Center at the University of Pittsburgh is proud to announce the National Association of Future Doctors of Audiology, University of Pittsburgh Chapter (NAFDA@pitt) won OUTSTANDING CHAPTER OF THE YEAR for the 2004-2005 year. Marie-Lys Cattanach, UCLID Fellow & President of NAFDA@pitt, and the 3-year organization were recognized by the national NAFDA board in front of fellow students and esteemed professionals for their dedication to the advancement of the field of audiology and for the continuous support they provide to the graduate students of the CSD/Audiology program at Pitt as well as to the greater Pittsburgh Community. Among their many accomplishments are the Annual White Coat Ceremony, the Annual AAA Encore conference; collecting 58 used hearing aids and $100.00 to benefit the Starkey Hearing Foundation; helping a local audiologist rebuild her practice after the floods of May 2004; and providing audiology students with educational resources and leadership opportunities.

UCLID Sponsors Film in Pittsburgh Jewish-Israeli Festival
 

The UCLID Center at the University of Pittsburgh is sponsoring a film to be shown at the 12th Annual Pittsburgh Jewish-Israeli Film Festival. Nitsan and Sagi, a film about a young couple with Down Syndrome, is showing on Sunday, April 17 at 11 a.m. in the SouthSide Works Cinema. For more information, click here.

UCLID Faculty Member Collaborates on Autism & Diet Study
 
Meg Mayer-Costa, a UCLID faculty member, along with physicians and psychologists from the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh's Child Development Unit (CDU), are researching the effects of dietary modifications on symptomology for young children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. These modifications include the popular, yet largely unstudied, recommendation for children to follow a gluten-fee/casein-free diet, or take omega 3 fatty acid supplements, or follow a sugar restricted diet. Results from this study may assist with treatment of children with this disorder. If you are interested in learning more about this study, please call Dr. Michelle Zimmer at 412-692-8404.

UCLID Continues SSI Collaboration Project

The UCLID Center at the University of Pittsburgh has been awarded a grant to continue the Children's SSI Project. This project is a collaborative effort of the Social Security Administration (SSA) Office of Disability, the Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD) and the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD). The UCLID Center works closely with the Bureau of Disability Determination in Greensburg, PA to improve case adjudication and enhance adjudicator training.

Former UCLID Trainee Recognized for Advocacy

The UCLID Center at the University of Pittsburgh is proud to announce Carryn Rice, third year medical student, member of the Area of Concentration in Disabilities Medicine, and former UCLID trainee, was presented the Sally Miller Award for Advocacy on Behalf of the Medically Underserved at the Diversity Programs Minority Student Recognition Reception. Congratulations!

UCLID Fellow and Trainee Awarded Certificate of Merit

Fellow Julie Ogonowski MPH and trainee Esther Glick, both first year medical students at the University of Pittsburgh, were awarded Certificates of Merit at the Medical Student Summer Research Symposium. Julie and Esther used the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health to create profiles of children with apraxia of speech. Congratulations!

Former UCLID Fellow Awarded Scholarship

The UCLID Center at the University of Pittsburgh is proud to announce Jennifer Vargo, former UCLID trainee, was awarded a William F. Austin Scholarship on August 6, 2004. Jennifer is one of five audiology graduate students selected to receive up to $10,000 for the 2004-2005 academic year. Congratulations!

UCLID Awarded National Service Inclusion Project Minigrant
The UCLID Center at the University of Pittsburgh is collaborating with Keys-Americorp and the Pittsburgh Public Schools' City Connection Program to provide opportunities for high school youths with disabilities to continue their education in working environments. This program, called Youth Inclusion Project (YIP), Achieving Inclusion through Volunteerism for Youths with Disabilities, is partnering with City Connection youths and Keys-Americorp members in community Service-Learning projects. In May 2005, look for the youths' stories of what they learned from their participation.
