The West Virginia Assistive Technology System (WVATS) increases awareness of and accessibility to assistive technology.
- WVATS Regional Resource Centers have assistive technology lending libraries, toll-free information hotlines, and the ability to provide sites for free demonstrations of assistive technology devices.
- WVATS Tech Teams are community based problem solving groups that serve as regional consulting and support groups for individuals with disabilities. They disseminate information and support technology related activities in the communities.
What does WVATS do?
- Assists people in obtaining assistive technology through knowledge about funding and advocates with them through the WVATS partnership with WV Advocates.
- Creates opportunities for individuals with disabilities to share in making decisions about WVATS goals through membership on the advisory boards. WVATS promotes involvement of individuals with disabilities in making decisions about the assistive technology they need.
- Increases public awareness about assistive technology through fact sheets, exhibits, loan libraries, news releases, demonstrations, and the WVATS quarterly newsletter.
- Identifies barriers within and among service and funding agencies. Works to change policies, regulations and practices to help connect people to the AT they need.
- Offers training and technical assistance to individuals with disabilities, their families and those involved in providing assistive technology devices and services.
